8tAugust 2021 Trinity 10                                                       All Saints Church, Childwall

READ:  Ephesians 4 v25 – 5 v2 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.  29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.  5 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

REFLECT:

In the second half of the letter to the Ephesians Paul emphasizes the Christian’s walk.  Our Christian lives must be radically different from our old life, before we had faith.  He gives us 3 warnings! He encourages us to ‘put-off’ certain practices associated with our old life and to ‘put-on’ the new life of Christ.  Thirdly he highlights the necessity to ‘put-away’ certain sins and practices once-for-all (v25 7 v31).

The Christian life is compared to a walk because it starts with one step of faith, involves progress and needs balance and strength.  There is a focus from Paul about our own individual relationship with each other in the church.  We are called to walk in unity, with our fellow Christians.   It is through Christ that we have unity as Christians – we are one in Christ!

We are not told to manufacture unity but to maintain the unity that already exists as one body through Christ.  How do we do this?  We must ‘put-off’ falsehood and speak words of truth and not allow anger to take a hold.  Easier said than done, but Paul gives us a very helpful practical solution.  He encourages us not to let the sun go down whilst we are still angry.  In other words do not let one day end if we have fallen out with someone or had cross words but go and put things right. As Christians as followers of Christ he calls us to lead by example.

Paul goes on to focus on the believer’s relationship with the world.  We are called to walk in purity.

We cannot separate ourselves from the world because we are part of it and we have a responsibility to witness to it.  But we do need to walk in purity and not allow the world to defile us.

Stealing is a selfish act benefitting only the person who has stolen.  But when we work for a living we have the opportunity to help others, sharing what we have with those in needs.  The way that we speak to others should build people up and not pull them down.  Words have a powerful impact and as believers our words should benefit and not bruise others!

Finally we should walk in love, as God’s children, we should imitate our Father.  God is love, and we should walk in love.

RESPOND:

How important do you think unity is in Christ’s church?  Do you find it easy to have unity with other believers, or is it a challenge sometimes?

Who you are determines what you do and how you live!  If you are a believer, a Christian, does the way you live and speak and treat others show your faith clearly to others?  What areas do you find particularly difficult?

PRAY: Heavenly Father, help me to walk with Jesus Christ all the days I live of this life on earth.  To give to him complete control of my body, mind and soul.  Through Christ my Lord.  Amen

HERITAGE WEEKEND

All Saints will be open for Heritage Weekend this year on 18th and 19th September. We are looking for stewards to be in Church for two hour sessions on both the Saturday and the Sunday.

Times are as follows:

Saturday: 10.00am – 12.00pm, 12.00pm – 2.00pm, 2.00pm – 4.00pm

Sunday: 2.00pm – 4.00pm.

You don’t need a lot of knowledge of the history of the Church. There will be information available. The job of the stewards is to welcome people into the building and point them in the right direction! It’s a great way to show our community that we are a Church which is more than just a beautiful, historic building – we are a people who are welcoming and friendly.
