Weekly sheet 24.10.2021

By 23rd October 2021Latest News

24th October 2021 – Bible Sunday                                                       All Saints Church, Childwall

Read: 2 Timothy 3 v14 – 4 v5

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Reflect:

This Sunday is known as ‘Bible Sunday’.  On this Sunday our bible reading particularly reminds us of the importance and truth of God’s word the Bible!  Have you ever stopped and reflected on the fact that all scripture is God-breathed, it is his inspired word that has been recorded for our benefit?

The first bible that I ever read for myself was one that my Godmother had given me at my baptism.

For many years growing up I had this bible but I didn’t read it.  In many ways I was overwhelmed by the endless pages of words.  In the front though was a personal message from my Godmother Doreen where she had highlighted Joshua ch1 v9, “Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  Before I started reading this bible regularly, I would often get it out and read this single verse.  This was the first verse from the bible that I learned and could remember, and it has remained very important to me to this day.

To me God’s word the Bible is powerful and effective.  It directs us and guides us and gives us values and principles to live by.  It is equally challenging though and is not always comfortable to read, because God calls us to live by his standards and not our own.  Our passage today gives us a very clear charge or responsibility.  To proclaim and preach God’s word ‘in season and out of season’, in other words, every day!  I encourage you to read the passage above and reflect on its words. The bible is not just there to teach us but to rebuke and correct us as well! We are told to be patient though for often we are slow to respond, we need to hear God’s word repeatedly and take time to digest his words.  Ultimately, we need to be obedient to the truth that his word contains and to be willing to put it into practice.

Respond:

What was the first verse from the bible that you can remember reading and learning?  What is the significance of that verse for you?  When do you read or hear God’s word regularly?  Is it just on a Sunday when you are in church?  I encourage you to make a daily habit of reading God’s word.  There are many ways that you can do this yourself.  There are many digital versions available now on apps, which make reading accessible and regular, particularly when you are sent reminders!

Pray: Blessed Lord, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning: help us so to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word, we may embrace and for ever hold fast the hope of everlasting life.  Through Christ our Lord Amen.
