21st November 2021 All Saints Church, Childwall

Read: Ephesians 2v11-18 – 11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)— 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and
strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Reflect: As you heard the news of the bomb blast at the Women’s hospital in Liverpool, I wonder what thoughts went through your mind? For me there was a sense of shock and bewilderment, and sadness that this happened here. I remember standing at the front door of our house in Papua New Guinea, seeing burning buildings on the hill and hearing gunshots. Tribal fighting had come to our neighbourhood and we heard stories of deaths and treated the wounded in the hospital. It was hard to understand why it was happening and we longed for peace. Conflict has been part of our world since the Fall when Adam and Eve rebelled against God and wanted to go their own way. Sin became a barrier that cut them off from God. In subsequent generations there have been many conflicts and whilst we see it happening in other parts of the world it is present too in our country, our neighbourhood and in our homes and hearts.
In the book of Ephesians Paul addresses a conflict between Jews and Gentiles (non-Jews), two groups that would have been represented in the church at Ephesus. He reminds them of what Christ has done from them, shedding His blood on the cross to pay for sin and bring them from far away to near, to have access to God the Father and be part of His people. As the “vertical” barrier of hostility between us and God was broken down through the cross, the “horizontal” barrier of hostility between us and others has been broken down too. We can find unity in the people of God. As we draw near to God, we draw near to one another and together are being built up into a living temple with Christ as the foundation stone. Whether it is people caught up in conflict or ourselves facing conflict in our lives, our deepest need is for reconciliation with God which enables us to be reconciled to one another.
Respond: How have you been impacted by conflict? What do you think is the root cause of conflict? Have you been reconciled to God through what Jesus has done? Has that reconciliation extended to others in your life or are there still areas where things need to be put right in your relationships with others? What step could you take this week to move towards peace and unity?

Pray: Heavenly Father, we thank you that through Christ Jesus, we who were once far have been brought near through what He did on the cross for us. We thank you that the barrier of hostility between us and you has been broken down. We thank you for the reconciliation we can experience with you and we pray that this reconciliation would extend to others in our lives. We pray for those impacted by conflict that they would know peace with You and that they would find reconciliation with others. In Jesus name, Amen
Dave Moore (Mission partner with New Tribes Mission)
