17th April 2022 – Easter Sunday

17th April 2022 – Easter Sunday All Saints Church, Childwall
Read: Luke 24: 1-12 – Jesus has Risen
24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had
prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in
Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ 8 Then they remembered his words.
9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like
nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
Reflect:
On the first Easter Sunday very early in the morning it was a group of women that were the first to go to the tomb of Jesus. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and some others were all there. They were carrying prepared spices to complete the ritual burial of the body. On arrival they must have stopped and stared in shock for the large stone that sealed the tomb had been rolled away. This was not what they were expecting, and must have caused a real stir amongst them. They go into the tomb to see what is going on. Inside whilst they are wondering what has happened two men in gleaming clothes appear, the women are frightened and bow down to the ground. The angels ask them why they are looking for the living amongst the dead. They declare that Jesus is not there because he has risen and remind the women of this truth that Jesus had previously told them.
Whenever you receive good news in life, particularly when it is exciting the natural response is to share it. You want to tell someone immediately!
After leaving the tomb the women’s focus was no different they went to tell the disciples the good news. For them the news that Jesus had risen, they truly believed! They didn’t get the reception they expected though. In fact the disciples felt they were talking nonsense. I wonder how this made the women feel? Did they try and convince them that what they were saying was true? What we do know is that Peter who was there and heard their firsthand testimony responded immediately by going to the tomb himself. What is significant is that he ran, he was eager to get there quickly. He obviously hadn’t dismissed the words of the women, in fact his actions imply that he was open minded and he wanted to see for himself!
Respond: What do you believe, when you hear the statement, ‘Jesus is Risen’? Do you think it is nonsense and dismiss it as a tale? Or maybe you want to know more, and like Peter are eager to find out for yourself. I personally believe that Jesus Christ rose from the dead is alive today and calls us all to follow him. He also calls us to share this life changing news. When was the last time you told someone what you believe?
Pray: Heavenly Father, Thank you for sending your Son Jesus Christ to be my Saviour, dying for me and rising again. Help me to believe in you and help me to follow you and share this good news with others. Through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.
