Advent Sunday 28th November 2021 All Saints Church Childwall

READ: Luke 21:25/36 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
REFLECT: Today is Advent Sunday, the beginning of the season of Advent which is, arguably, the lost season of the Christian Calendar. The most commonly heard phrase during Advent is probably, ‘I’m really looking forward to Christmas!’ Advent is, indeed, supposed to be a time of looking forward, not just to Christmas, but beyond Christmas to the Day when Jesus will return and bring history to fulfillment. Sadly, the frantic activity leading up to Christmas often pushes this wider perspective of Advent aside.
The people of Jesus’ day were looking forward to the day when the earthly Kingdom of David would be restored, but that was never the focus of Jesus’ teaching or hope! Jesus poured cold water on that dream, and pointed his followers to a future day when He will return and the Kingdom of Heaven will come in fullness. Just as the countdown to Christmas, the first coming of Jesus, is marked by various sights, signs and sounds, according to the NT, the Second Coming of Jesus will also be marked with various signs. It will be preceded by a time of cosmic, environmental and international upheaval. It will be, says Jesus, a time of great anxiety, trepidation and fear. Yet, Jesus also says that we are to view the things He speaks of as signs of the coming fulfillment of God’s promises; like leaves on the trees heralding the coming of summer. But is what we are witnessing at present [wars, famine, mass migration, climate change and its impact etc.] part of the signs Jesus speaks of? We simply don’t know and we must beware the attitude of some US Preachers who say that they are and, therefore, we should do nothing about them because God is about to sort it all out!! No! I believe that despite what we see around us we are still called to be good stewards of God’s creation [people and planet]. Nobody knows when the end of time will be, precisely, but in the meantime, Jesus warns that we need to be alert and much given to prayer. And what is it that we are to pray for? That it won’t happen? No! Rather for the strength to stand firm and to pass through these trials and tribulations faithfully. What is the one thing that Jesus specifically warns against in this passage? See v 34, ‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life…’ We know how easy it is to do that, especially around Christmas/New Year, don’t we? The trappings of the season can so easily distract us from the celebration of the birth of Jesus. But we also need to be ‘on guard’ throughout the rest of the year because these same ‘things’ can take our focus away from following Jesus and being ready for His return and, whenever that is, I want to hear the words ‘Well done good and faithful servant’ not the words, ‘You wicked and lazy servant!’ [see Matthew 25].
RESPOND: Why not use this Advent as a time of reflection? Possibly use a resource such as ‘The Advent Project’ see https://theadventusproject.wordpress.com or similar.
PRAY: Father God, Keep us watchful and faithful as we await the coming of your Son our Lord; that, when he shall appear, he may not find us sleeping in sin, but active in his service and joyful in his praise through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Rev. Bill Forster [Associate Minister]
